After getting out of class yesterday, I walked to my dorm to discover that Icould not go inside because the fire alarms were going off. There were about 20 girls outside, as to which none of them knew what was going on. After calling security and maintenance and freezing for about 10 minutes, water started pouring down the side of the dorm. The girls then realized that the water pipes had busted. I looked up at the fourth floor and saw water falling from the ceiling, it honestly looked just like 10 waterfalls. Security then allowed us to come inside out of the cold but we could only stay in the main areas. Eventually they realized this was a bad idea and we needed to get all of our things out because the dorm was going under. I went down to my room, on the 1st floor, and water was everywhere. After my roommates and I evacuated all of our things, we went to the 4th floor to help a friend. It literally look like a land based Titanic up there. Water had filled the lights and caused them to come down and shatter, just like the chandeliers did on the ship. The hallways had about 3 inches of water floating above the carpet, and pieces of the celling were scattered all over the ground. There were even some rooms that the celling completely fell into, ruining everything... including the rooms directly below. This situation frightens me a bit because the University is not responsible or reliable to any damage done to items that are not University property. So it saddens me that these girls will return to reunite with friends and laughter, but will be shot down when they realize that everything they had was destroyed and the University will not do a thing about it. I think that something should be done for them. (I do not have proper knowledge on this subject and do not know if the University has plans to help them, but I know it is in their policy to not have the responsibility to a thing about it.) I truly hope that something can be done, and things get back to order as soon as possible.
This is horrible! I lived in Calvert my freshmen year and thank goodness I don't live there anymore! I agree, the university should do something to help them out.
